Job Description:
Looking to make a difference in the Iowa State community by financially educating college students and their families?
Located in the heart of Iowa State’s campus, the Office of Student Financial Aid is a unit within the division of Academic Affairs that administers more than $400 million in federal, state, institutional, and private funds to over 85% of undergraduate students, along with additional support for domestic graduate students seeking aid. We strive to help all students succeed in their Iowa State experience through education and outreach to create an understanding of available financial aid opportunities.

As a Financial Aid Advisor III, you will inform students and families of their financial aid options, including how to submit aid applications, as well as information on federal and institutional aid availability and eligibility requirements. You will also teach students important financial literacy topics during one-on-one meetings and during group presentations, fostering positive financial discussions to set students up for financial success. Informing students and their families of the affordability of Iowa State is also essential to our role. Staffing university resource fairs and meeting with prospective students in surrounding communities are ways we introduce students to the world of financial aid and to our welcoming staff.

In this position, you will provide supervision to the main financial aid advising team and work with office leadership to ensure customer service needs are met. You will administer the university’s default management programs and manage the review of professional judgment appeals, such as independent appeals, marital status appeals, and special condition appeals. In this position, you will assist with creating office-wide training programs and materials and maintaining written policy and procedure guides. As a Financial Aid Advisor III, you will have the ability to work both independently, as well as in a team environment. You must be detail-oriented, creative, and possess the ability to manage multiple ongoing tasks, as well as be a self-motivated individual with strong communication and problem-solving skills.

The Office of Student Financial Aid values student success, accountability, innovation, collaboration, dignity and respect, and advocacy above all else. While we are dedicated to serving students, we also place importance on professional growth and development in the workplace by offering staff retreats and conference opportunities throughout the year. We value each member of our team and believe each of us has unique skills that enhance our work. We work to get to know each other’s individual strengths and weaknesses, creating a space for open dialogue and optimal collaboration.
